The JikoJoy Charcoal Stove is a smokeless and portable charcoal-burning cook stove. Manufactured by Kenya Stove in Nairobi (Kenya), it is designed to require less charcoal per cooking task.

According to the manufacturer, most users reduce fuel consumption by half compared to traditional Kenya Ceramic Jiko stoves, reducing charcoal demand and deforestation associated with charcoal production. This product appears to be discontinued since 2015.

Distributions to Date Status

The number of charcoal stoves distributed is unknown, however, and for July 2015 stoves were distributed in Kinoo, Uthiru and across Nairobi, Kenya.

Design Specifications

Made by heavy gauge metal, design specifications include a strong and sturdy metal frame, the grill, heavy-duty pot stands, and a circular handle. It weighs 4.2 kg and its dimensions (l/w/h) are 330 x 300 x 210 mm. Maximum pot capacity is 5 L and people fed per meal are between 1 and 6.

The main objective when designing the Jiko.Joy! was to have an affordable solution that reduced the health risks related to indoor air pollution and deforestation, while emitting 50% less carbon monoxide and smoke than the traditional charcoal jiko and while consuming half charcoal.
