The SteraMist  Unit is a fully portable, handheld, point and spray disinfection/decontamination system with a 12 month warranty.  It has an application time of  five seconds per square foot and a seven-minute contact time to disinfect/decontaminate. The device operates on the Ionized Hydrogen Peroxide (iHP) technology with one spraying  port. Its dimensions are 0.64 m Length x 0.56 m Width x 0.38 m Depth and weighs 22 Kg. The device has a flow rate of 50 ml per minute with a treatment method  of 1 ml per ft.2. Steramist kills and deactivates bacteria and viruses with no risk of exposure in treated spaces. It has material and surface  compatibility because of its Silver, Chlorine and Peracetic Acid free formula.

Compliance with regulations

Steramist is registered on EPA list K, list L, and list G (Reg. No. 90150-2 | EPA Est. No. 72038-DE-001). It is also registered with the USFDA.

Other Information

Steramist requires continuous attention by the user, thus it may not be appropriate in settings with limited human resources. TOMI states that:

  • Disinfection takes 5 seconds per square foot
  • Room cleaning can be done in 10 minutes (varies by size)
Consumables must be purchased from TOMI (which currently only operates in Europe, North America, and China). Steramist was awarded by USAID for 'Improving the Safety of Health Care Workers' to be used for disinfection to eradicate Ebola and strengthen local healthcare systems. The deployment of this technology should be coupled with culturally appropriate training methods to ensure safe use.

The amount of human labor and time required to use the device must be considered; The product appears to involve continuous attention by a provider which may be challenging in settings that are dealing with provider shortages. There are complex healthcare supply chain challenges in emerging markets that must be considered in order to reliably deliver the consumable hydrogen peroxide solution which is required for this product. The deployment of this technology should be coupled with culturally appropriate training methods to ensure safe use.
