CycloClean is a point-of-use, bicycle-driven water purification system that is comprised of four filters attached to the rear seat of the bicycle. The product was developed by Nippon Basic Co. Ltd. Water is pumped via pedal action, from the source through a series of filters to output clean water.

Design Specifications

CycloClean bicycle is comprised of a bicycle that doubles as transportation and water purification. The purification system is made of four filters, a pre-filter and three filters to purify water for drinking - 1 microfiltration membrane filter, 1 hybrid carbon filter, and 1 primary filter. Cycloclean filters dirt, bacteria, and smell from the raw water (rainwater, river, or lake). The system can purify 5 L of raw water in one minute.

Vetted Performance Status

UNIDO states that a unit of this technology can produce 5 liters of clean drinking water per minute from raw water, however, there was no evaluation of microorganism reduction.

Seawater is not appropriate to be used as a water supply.
