Design Specifications

The filter medium is produced by systematic heat treatment of rice hulls. Rice hulls are heated to 250-500 degrees in 1-10 minute cycles to char the organic fiber material. The husk fibers are removed with sodium biocarbonate, before further treatment with nitric acid. The remaining product is treated with Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA, C10H16N2O8), and mixed with Portland Cement, and sand. The mixture is dried and pulverized, to produce individual particle sizes of between about 2-5 mm. The mixture is about 1 part organic fiber material, about 1 part EDTA, about 3 parts Portland Cement, and about 3 parts sand. This mixture is sold as the media itself or as filter kits for individual use or household use. The individual use kit comprises of a 1L bottle with a filter at the mouth. The household use kit consists of a pump, tank, and filter for which untreated water is fed through.
