Product Description

Turbulent’s hydropower system is inspired and powered by the natural phenomenon of a water vortex. The system integrates an intake, turbine, generation device, and tailrace. Each vortex turbine delivers 15-100 kW and can operate even with a low height difference. The System can be installed in any river, canal, or even in a waterway that has drops ranging from 1.5-5 m.  The system can produce energy using an individual turbine or a group of turbines as required. It can be used either as an on-grid or as an off-grid system.

Turbulent is based in Antwerp, Belgium with additional operations in Santiago, Chile. The organization has completed several projects across the world.

Design Specifications

The turbine impeller is designed to operate with a low rpm, low shear stress, and has a slow rate of pressure difference over the blade ensuring it will not cause any negative impact on the marine life. The system is designed in a way that it will not sustain any damages if any flooding occurs in the river. During a flooding situation, the elements of the entire product will submerge up to 10 m below the water. The overall system can be monitored from any location at any given time as it is integrated with a remote monitoring software.  All the parts of the rotor and the casting of the turbine have been designed using Stainless Steel.

Manufacturer Specified Performance Parameters

An eco-friendly, resilient and a low cost turbine that can be operated even with a low head.

Vetted Performance Status

A study conducted by the manufacturer determined that the turbines are fish-friendly. The CFD model has been validated using a real scenario project conducted in Chile. The manufacturers are currently carrying out further research with a university to further validate this through real fish experiments.

Safety

Be sure to follow proper electrical installation and control guidelines.
